‘Twelve Steps’ is a concept album about Alcoholism, written by singer and songwriter Louis Puggaard-Müller. He experienced his dad’s battle first hand during his late teens and early twenties when he saw his father slowly slip away into a severe alcohol addiction. As he moved to The Netherlands his dad was in rehab and in order to process, Louis decided to read the famous AA ‘twelve steps’ for himself. It led him to create an artistic adaptation of the steps mentioned in the book: For each step a song.
At first, it was a way of dealing with all the anger and frustrations of being powerless towards his dad and his egocentric decisions. But later it became a meditation on how it is to be a relative to the disease that is alcoholism
In collaboration with Ivo Schot and Ryan Wilson, the songs turned into a concept album, composed of pieces of music ranging from head bobbing grunge songs, to elaborate alternative arrangements and intimate folk classics.
This album is inspired, written and dedicated to my father and friend who made it to the sober side, full of scars, wisdom, memory loss and the most wonderful and witty humor still intact.
